Unmasked!<\/p>\n
Wilhelm grabbed the remote control and turned up the volume. \u201cBe quiet, the movie\u2019s starting.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was 10:00 p.m., we were home alone, and they were showing a horror movie on TV.\u00a0The Fly. It was about a scientist, who\u2014in an ill-fated experiment\u2014happened to mix genes with a regular house fly. In the beginning the man didn\u2019t realize that something had gone wrong. But then he started developing the most amazing powers.<\/p>\n
\u201cMan, that\u2019s just like you, Pelle!\u201d Wilhelm said when the scientist demonstrated his incredible strength.<\/p>\n
I smiled, folded my fingers around one of the legs of the coffee table, and lifted it up like a plate. \u201cMore candy?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShow off,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the scientist\u2019s changes didn\u2019t stop with a couple of newly acquired superpowers. He also started to transform physically: His nails came off, his hair fell out, and he began looking less and less like a man. He was actually\u00a0becoming\u00a0a fly.<\/p>\n
At the same time, I was sitting in the sofa feeling sicker and sicker. I kept hearing Wilhelm saying: \u2018Man, that\u2019s just like you, Pelle!\u2019 and finally it became too much.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo more,\u201d I said, when the scientist in another gross scene scratched his ear and it fell off with a sticky slurp. \u201cLet\u2019s do something else.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOk,\u201d Wilhelm answered quickly. For the last fifteen minutes he\u2019d been sitting with a pillow in front of his face. He snatched up the remote and turned off the TV. \u201cIt\u2019s a crappy movie anyway. It\u2019s not even scary.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDo you want to play a game?\u201d I asked, quickly shoving my hands in my pockets when I realized I was feeling for antennas on my forehead. Stupid movie.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think we have any games except for some jigsaw-puzzles.\u201d<\/p>\n
It turned out that they didn\u2019t even have a jigsaw-puzzle so we decided to go to my place to get some games.<\/p>\n
The streets were silent and empty in the cold darkness and Wilhelm agreed to a little race.\u00a0He rode his bike, while I ran.\u00a0Several times I had to stop and wait for him to catch up. Still, I won by a wide margin.<\/p>\n
I was standing in the driveway with my arms in the air when Wilhelm came panting around the corner.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat took you a while,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, it\u2019s unfair,\u201d he wheezed, climbing off his bike.\u00a0\u201cYou\u2019re doped.\u00a0But you haven\u2019t won yet because \u2026 the door\u2019s the finish line!\u201d He sprinted up the driveway and I followed. I passed him, laughing. Then I stopped. The smile on my lips froze.<\/p>\n
Wilhelm bumped into me, but I barely noticed it.<\/p>\n
\u201cOuch, Pelle, my frigging nose! What are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe door,\u201d I whispered. \u201cIt\u2019s open.\u201d<\/p>\n
And it was. Slightly.\u00a0Black shadows starred out at us. I tiptoed closer and pushed the door open. Moonlight lit up the hall and I saw it immediately. The mud on the floor. Footprints.<\/p>\n
We\u2019ve been robbed, was my first thought, which was immediately replaced by a new and far more terrifying one:\u00a0Maybe we\u00a0are\u00a0being robbed. Maybe \u2026 Maybe the burglar is still in there.<\/p>\n
I stepped into the house, my heart racing.<\/p>\n
\u201cPelle, do you think this is a good idea \u2026\u201d Wilhelm said. I turned quickly, a finger on my lips. His eyes were big and scared. I motioned for him to follow me. The footprints led into the kitchen. Wilhelm kept so close that he nearly stepped on my heels.<\/p>\n
The house was dark and quiet. And yet, it wasn\u2019t as dark as it should be, I suddenly realized. In the kitchen I glanced up the stairs. Saw the mud on the steps. Saw the light shining through the trapdoor to the attic. The ladder was down.<\/p>\n
The Anthill!<\/p>\n
Not caring one bit about being cautious, I raced up the stairs and climbed the ladder to the attic.<\/p>\n
I was met by a horrible stench. I didn\u2019t know what it was, but it felt like red-hot needles in my nose and eyes.<\/p>\n
The attic was empty.\u00a0But someone had been there.<\/p>\n
Someone had riffled through the clothes on the coat rack and found my Antboy-suits. They were lying on the floor, almost as if they were posing. The intruder had also found my scrapbook. It was open to the story about how Antboy had saved a little girl who\u2019d fallen through the ice last winter. Lying next to the book was the Antbelt.<\/p>\n
